» I was wondering if it is possible to edit plant notes without reopening the edit page all the time. Now, if I edit one item, I have to open the corresponding box, make the edit and then the page is jumping to the top. It would be nice if one could edit different items in one edit. Opening all the different boxes, scrolling etc... is very time consuming. (asked by Hugo, Belgium)
We agree 100% with you that it is time consuming as we update plants everyday ourselves using the system.
However the issues are as follows:
The plant profiles must be;
- Fast downloading
- Free of programming bugs
- Easy to use
- Well organised
After you edit the plant the page will jump back down to where you edited. This can be good and bad. The page refreshes so that you can see your information go live and if you only want to update one attribute then you may want to go back to the top. However, if you are editing many attributes you will probably want to go back to where you edited so we have opted for this now and we'll see what people think. When you click the page the pop up message will disappear automatically. You will not have to click it.
Why can you not update multiple plant attributes at the same time?
There are currently 77 plant attributes and this will increase. If they were all the same structure it would be easy to mass update however some have colour options, some are multiple selects, some are image options etc. and so it becomes complex to process.
If we programmed the page to be able to update all of them at once we would have 3 major problems:
- The page size itself would get very large and be much slower downloading and no one would use the website.
- Programming all the combinations of 77 attributes to be updated at once can add up to literally 1,000's of variations in queries to the database. Debugging the database queries becomes very difficult with such large amounts of options in one go and you would end up with errors.
- If someone was updating many different attributes of a plant in one go and the server had a problem, or your browser crashed or your computer stalled (you know yourself!) then you would lose the work.
So that's the short answer! We will keep trying to make it easier to update, and as technology improves, so will the site. Please keep giving us your feedback as we overlook things because we work on it every day. Every pair of eyes count.
- Tidbit
- Don't throw slug pellets on the ground in a bunch as the smell of pellets attracts snails/slugs. Instead lightly scatter them near the plants you want to protect. If you're snail friendly you will need to place them at least 300ft (100m) away from your garden as they have a strong homing instinct!
